What is Technical Copywriting/Technical Writing?

Technical writing is writing to inform and explain rather than to persuade. Technical writers help people to understand a product, service or idea. The term is often linked to the IT and Technology industries (eg. writing relating to computer hardware and software and engineering).  However, many other industries use technical writers to produce documents such as:

  • Online help information
  • Training and product manuals
  • Product information
  • White papers
  • Business correspondence
  • Reports
  • Planning documents
  • Bid proposals

This is different from marketing copywriting, which is used for the purposes of increasing brand awareness, advertising or marketing. Examples of marketing copywriting can include: PR, blogs, social media posts, magazine articles and direct mail.
